What is ZEISS SMILE?

ZEISS SMILE is a minimally invasive procedure that corrects nearsightedness and astigmatism in qualified patients. One of the things that patients love about ZEISS SMILE is even if they aren't good LASIK candidates, they may still be good candidates for ZEISS SMILE.

If you weren't a good LASIK candidate due to dry eyes, thin corneas, or having a prescription too strong for LASIK to treat, you might be better suited to ZEISS SMILE instead. These factors won't stand in the way of getting ZEISS SMILE or your dreams of sharp, clear vision without the constraints of visual aids.

How ZEISS SMILE Works and What the Procedure Is Like

ZEISS SMILE uses a ZEISS VISUMAX 800 femtosecond laser to reshape your cornea and correct refractive errors like nearsightedness and mild astigmatism. Thanks to the ZEISS VISUMAX 800 femtosecond laser, the procedure only takes 9 seconds to complete.

With the femtosecond laser, ZEISS SMILE creates a small piece of tissue called a lenticule in the cornea. The lenticule is about the size of a contact lens, thicker in the center and thinner at its edge.

Creating the lenticule penetrates the cornea without disturbing its surface or nerves. Once the lenticule is made, your surgeon at Dell Laser Consultants will use the ZEISS VISUMAX 800 femtosecond laser to create a small incision that's 6 millimeters or less to remove the lenticule.

The lenticule is then removed from the layers of corneal tissue and extracted from the small incision. Removing the lenticule helps permanently reshape the cornea and correct your refractive errors.

The incision does not require any stitches or sutures and will heal on its own after a few days during the ZEISS SMILE recovery process.

Who is a Good Candidate for ZEISS SMILE?

Although ZEISS SMILE may sound like the vision correction procedure you've always wanted, it's not suitable for everyone. You may be a good candidate for ZEISS SMILE if:

  • You're at least 18 years old
  • You're in good health
  • You have a stable prescription that's remained unchanged for a year or more
  • You're nearsighted with a prescription between -1 diopters and -10 diopters
  • You're not farsighted, as ZEISS SMILE is not FDA-approved to correct this refractive error
  • If you have astigmatism, it can only be up to 3 diopters
  • You have realistic expectations for what a vision correction procedure like ZEISS SMILE could achieve for you
  • You don't have any autoimmune conditions like lupus or Sjogren's syndrome that could make it more challenging to recover after the procedure

If you think you could be a good candidate for ZEISS SMILE, take the next step by scheduling your consultation at Dell Laser Consultants in Austin, TX!

Recovering After ZEISS SMILE at Dell Laser Consultants

On the day of your ZEISS SMILE procedure, you'll need someone to drive you there and home, as your vision may be unstable or blurry. Many patients notice almost immediate visual improvements after ZEISS SMILE, which will continue improving in the days after ZEISS SMILE.

You may notice minimal discomfort, but you should be able to quickly return to your usual routine, including returning to work and driving the day after having ZEISS SMILE. Once you return from having ZEISS SMILE, one of the best things you can do is take a nap and rest your eyes.

Make sure to take all prescription eye drops as directed by your surgeon at Dell Laser Consultants to prevent infection and reduce inflammation. You'll also need to attend follow-up appointments beginning the day after having ZEISS SMILE.

These appointments ensure your eyes are healing as they should. Although complications are extremely rare, follow-up appointments help ensure your eyes are healthy and you're seeing correctly.

What Makes ZEISS SMILE Different from LASIK?

Although ZEISS SMILE and LASIK help correct vision, they are different. These procedures have several differences and are suited to other kinds of patients.

The first difference is that LASIK can correct all refractive errors, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. ZEISS SMILE can only correct nearsightedness and astigmatism.

Another significant difference is that LASIK creates a flap in the cornea. This procedure is a substantial part of LASIK because it is how the cornea is reshaped to correct refractive errors.

However, ZEISS SMILE does not create a flap but a lenticule, which is removed to correct appropriate refractive errors. Being a flapless procedure makes the cornea more stable during ZEISS SMILE.

This is important for patients who do not qualify for LASIK because the procedure requires removing a small amount of tissue from the cornea. However, the cornea is more stable with ZEISS SMILE, making it better suited to patients with dry eyes. ZEISS SMILE doesn't sever nerves in the cornea that may lead to dry eyes, which is a common side effect of having LASIK.

If you already have dry eyes or are nervous about developing dry eyes, ZEISS SMILE is considered the better option. Another thing that sets ZEISS SMILE apart from LASIK is that one laser is used during ZEISS SMILE, compared to two.

ZEISS SMILE uses a femtosecond laser, and LASIK uses a femtosecond laser and an excimer laser. Although there are many differences between LASIK and ZEISS SMILE, both procedures are excellent ways of correcting your vision.

What are the Benefits of Choosing to Correct Your Vision with ZEISS SMILE?

ZEISS SMILE is a state-of-the-art procedure that can change your life and offers numerous benefits if you want to improve your vision. These include:

ZEISS SMILE is Minimally Invasive

ZEISS SMILE is a minimally invasive procedure since it only requires a small incision in the cornea and removal of the lenticule to correct vision. Patients heal quickly and start experiencing sharper, more vibrant vision almost immediately.

Because of its minimally invasive nature, side effects associated with other vision correction procedures, like dry eye, are significantly minimized, allowing you to enjoy your new vision without discomfort.

ZEISS SMILE is Incredibly Precise

You want only the best for your eyes, and ZEISS SMILE uses exact and advanced technology. Thanks to the ZEISS VISUMAX 800 femtosecond laser, only the most optimal visual outcomes are achieved, with most patients ending up with 20/20 vision or better. Combined with the fact that ZEISS SMILE creates a lenticule, it's better if you have dry eyes or thin corneas.

ZEISS SMILE is an Investment in Yourself

If you're tired of the costs associated with visual aids, ZEISS SMILE is the perfect way to invest in yourself. Dell Laser Consultants offers CareCredit to our patients to ensure that cost doesn't hinder achieving the vision you want.

Payment plans are affordable and flexible to fit your budget easily. Most patients pay off their ZEISS SMILE procedure after only two years. After that point, you'll own your vision.

Imagine what you could do with the money you used to spend on the costs of your glasses, contacts, and accessories. That could be life-changing and a worthy investment in yourself!
