Giovanni ‘Gio’ Campagna, MD

Dr. Gio Campagna is a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist who specializes in cataract, refractive, and interventional glaucoma surgery. He also takes a particular interest in caring for patients in need of complex anterior segment surgery, including intraocular lens exchanges or repositioning, secondary intraocular lenses, and pupilloplasty procedures. As the son of an ophthalmologist, Dr. Campagna has a homegrown passion for the practice of medicine and is delighted to be an ophthalmologist at Dell Laser Consultants where he aims to elevate the standard of care for patients in Austin.

Dr. Campagna grew up in San Antonio and is a proud Texan. He received his undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from UT Austin, graduating summa cum laude, and went on to obtain his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine, graduating in the top of his class. Dr. Campagna completed his ophthalmology residency and was a chief resident at the world-renowned UCLA Stein Eye Institute, consistently regarded as one of the top 5 ophthalmology hospitals and training programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report. In his final endeavor of training, he pursued a fellowship in complex anterior segment surgery and glaucoma at Washington University in St. Louis under the tutelage of Dr. Arsham Sheybani, a world authority in challenging ocular surgical disorders.

He has published dozens of scientific articles in widely recognized peer-reviewed ophthalmic journals including Ophthalmology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology, and Cornea. Many of Dr. Campagna’s surgical footage has been featured at major meetings, on social media, and online on YouTube and CataractCoach.com, receiving awards and praise by ophthalmologists around the globe. He has a knack for educating his peers and helping patients navigate the often-overwhelming complexity of ophthalmic disorders, and he has won resident and fellow teaching awards at both UCLA and WashU to that effect.
