A woman’s body goes through many changes during pregnancy, and these developments help produce the best environment possible for the growing baby. At Dell Laser Consultants, our extensively trained medical team is dedicated to providing the highest-quality care to our patients. With this goal in mind, we typically recommend that expecting mothers postpone LASIK eye surgery until after they’ve given birth.

During pregnancy, a woman’s hormones can increase and decrease dramatically, which can affect many internal systems, including the eyes. As a result, LASIK results become less predictable. Furthermore, the eyes may not heal as quickly or in the same manner during pregnancy. Dry eye syndrome is a common condition among pregnant women and another factor to weigh before eye surgery; however, if you’re experiencing this issue, our Dry Eye Institute may be able to help you address the concern straightaway.

Another consideration is medication. Many patients are prescribed a mild oral sedative to help them relax before laser eye surgery, and anesthetizing eye drops are used to minimize any discomfort. The effects of these medications, as well as post-operative antibiotics, on unborn children are unknown. The safety of all our patients is a primary concern at Dell Laser Consultants. This is another reason you may wish to wait until after the birth of your child to consider LASIK surgery. Within a few months after delivery, you may be ready to undergo this procedure. We will be happy to discuss your needs and goals at that time.
