Your eyes are one of the most sensitive areas of your body, so it’s natural for you to be concerned about how LASIK eye surgery will feel. Fortunately, this brief procedure is often painless. Most patients report only mild discomfort, and our board certified ophthalmologists make every effort to ensure you have the most pleasant experience possible.
When you arrive for your LASIK treatment, anesthetizing eye drops will be administered. These are designed to keep your eyes from experiencing much sensation during the procedure. When the corneal flap is created (the first step of the surgery), you may feel some pressure. This effect should pass in about one minute, possibly even less. After the operation, your eyes may be sensitive to light and water, or feel mildly uncomfortable for a few hours. In many cases, if you take a nap after LASIK eye surgery, by the time you wake up these effects often will have passed.
Some short-term eye discomfort can occur, and we will provide prescription medication if needed until this subsides. However, most patients report little lasting irritation. Your care before and after treatment is our highest priority, and we encourage you to reach out to our skilled medical team if you have any questions.
