What is the

Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens is an advanced intraocular lens (IOL) that offers patients fully customized vision after cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange. Both of these procedures involve removing the natural lens of the eye and replacing it with an IOL.

While typical IOLs are set to one or more focusing powers before cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange, the Light Adjustable Lens is the only IOL that allows your eye doctor to adjust your vision after your procedure. This can give you peace of mind going in on surgery day, knowing you'll get to enjoy personalized vision adjustment that fits your preferences, needs, and lifestyle.

What is the

Light Adjustable Lens Plus?

The Light Adjustable Lens Plus (LAL+) is a modified version of the original Light Adjustable Lens that offers all the same benefits but with an extended depth of focus. It employs a modified surface curvature, which results in a slight increase in central lens power.

How Does the

Light Adjustable Lens Work?

The Light Adjustable Lens is uniquely formulated with a photosensitive material that allows your eye doctor to adjust the shape of your lens using ultraviolet (UV) light technology. When focusing the Light Delivery Device on your eye during non-invasive treatments, your eye doctor can change the power of the lens to bring you fully customized vision.

Between sessions, you'll have the opportunity to test-drive your new eyesight and make changes at future appointments. Most patients undergo around one to three light treatments with two additional lock-in treatments to finalize their vision.

Who is a Good

Candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens?

If you're interested in achieving a personalized visual outcome after cataract surgery, the Light Adjustable Lens could be right for you. Other signs you are a good candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens include:

  • You have had stable vision for at least one year
  • You have mild astigmatism
  • You do not have glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration
  • You want to reduce your reliance on visual aids
  • You have realistic expectations about what the Light Adjustable Lens can do for your vision
  • You are able to wear UV-protective glasses during recovery and attend all of your follow-up appointments
You can determine whether the Light Adjustable Lens is right for you through a consultation with your eye doctor at Dell Laser Consultants. They will perform a thorough eye exam and ask questions about your medical history, lifestyle, and visual goals.

What to Expect

During Recovery

After undergoing cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange with the Light Adjustable Lens, post-operative care is the same as any other IOL. You'll be required to use prescription eye drops that reduce inflammation and prevent infection, and refrain from driving, exercise, and strenuous activities until your eye doctor clears you to do so.

However, with the Light Adjustable Lens, you'll also need to wear special eye protection to prevent exposing the lens to UV light. You will need to wear your eye shield inside and outside at all times until your vision is finalized due to the light-sensitive technology used in the Light Adjustable Lens.

You can only take them off when showering, sleeping, washing your face, or applying eye drops. At your follow-up appointments with your eye doctor at Dell Laser Consultants, they will use the Light Delivery Device in 90-second increments to adjust the shape of your lens.

You'll attend around one to three sessions a few weeks after your surgery, in between which you can test out your vision and re-adjust if needed until you reach your desired visual outcome. The sessions will be spaced around three days apart and followed by two "lock-in" treatments to finalize your new vision.

Vision with the Light Adjustable Lens

Once your vision has been locked-in, you can enjoy stunningly clear eyesight designed just for you with the Light Adjustable Lens. By reducing or eliminating your need for visual aids like glasses and contacts, the Light Adjustable Lens can transform your life and bring you visual freedom.

Imagine enjoying every moment with clear, customized vision, from playing with your grandchildren, to unwinding with your favorite TV show, to embarking on a cruise and taking in all the sights. With the Light Adjustable Lens, you can fully embrace these moments in gorgeous high-definition.

Light Adjustable Lens FAQs

What Happens After Cataract Surgery With the Light Adjustable Lens?

After cataract surgery with the Light Adjustable Lens, you will need to have someone drive you home to begin recovery. Your cataract surgeon will send you home with special UV-protective glasses and prescription eye drops.

You'll need to make sure to use them according to their instructions. An important part of recovery is prioritizing rest and refraining from heavy physical activity.

At your follow-up appointments with your cataract surgeon, they will let you know when it's safe to resume normal activities.

Why Do You Have to Wear Special Glasses After Getting the Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens is made with special photosensitive material, which allows your eye doctor to reshape the lens after your procedure to reach your desired visual goals. To prevent any changes to your lens before its power is finalized, patients are required to wear special UV-protective glasses.

You must wear your UV-protective glasses at all times while recovering from your procedure to ensure your lenses are not exposed to UV light. However, you can remove them to sleep, shower, wash your face, and apply eye drops.

What Happens During the Light Treatment Sessions?

During the light treatment sessions, your eye doctor will use a coupling gel and a contact lens to target the UV light on the Light Adjustable Lens. Your appointment may take around an hour, but each treatment typically lasts only 90 seconds.

The number of light treatments you will need varies from patient to patient, but one to three treatments are typical. Once you are happy with your visual outcome, you will need to attend two more "lock-in" treatments to finalize your eyesight.

Who Should Consider the Light Adjustable Lens?

If you want to enjoy more peace of mind going into your cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange procedure, the Light Adjustable Lens may be right for you. Because it is the only IOL that can be adjusted after the procedure, you'll have the opportunity to fine-tune your vision to reach your goals.

The Light Adjustable Lens is also an excellent choice for patients looking for personalized, natural-feeling vision that fits seamlessly with their lifestyle. Between light treatments, you'll get to test out different vision options until arriving at a custom result made for you.
